Washington:US regulators have approved the treatment of an estimated 10,000 patients with recurrent herpes simplex, but the disease is now being treated in more than 100,000 patients, a U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) official said Thursday.
The approval was based on data from the National Health Service (NHS), the FDA’s largest agency, which includes the agency’s medical and pharmacy departments.
Health officials said in a statement that the treatment of recurrent herpes simplex, a serious infection, will “be approved by the FDA in October 2020.”
The new treatment is in the same drug category as Valtrex, which is used to treat chickenpox, and has been available for years.
In a statement, the FDA said the drugs were “equivalent, with the same active ingredients and with comparable safety profiles to Valtrex,” but that the drugs were not equivalent.
“In this approval, the FDA will continue to evaluate the effectiveness of Valtrex and its potential for long-term treatment,” the agency said.
In a statement, the agency also said the drug is available only through a drug program, which would include insurance coverage, and will remain available in the United States.
But the company also noted that the treatment has been approved for use in patients with a known or suspected herpes of the lips and throat. But the FDA’s advisory committee has not approved the use of Valtrex for treatment of herpes simplex. The committee also voted on the availability of Valtrex at a later date.
It said the use of the drug was not intended to treat or prevent herpes, but rather to treat an “intended use” condition.
“This approval underscores the importance of addressing herpes as soon as possible,” the FDA said.
The FDA is seeking approval to review the drug’s safety and effectiveness, but it has not yet approved the use of Valtrex.
In a separate statement, the agency said it was considering the use of Valtrex in women and men.
“The FDA’s approval of Valtrex is based on available data, but we do not know whether it would be effective for women, men or children,” the agency said.
Valtrex, which is a synthetic form of the herpes simplex virus, is also known to be effective in treating chickenpox, and has also been used to treat the recurrence of the disease in adults.
A new study published in the journalJAMA Internal Medicinefound that patients treated with Valtrex experienced an average increase of 1.5 times the chance of developing a recurrence of herpes simplex, compared with those treated with an inactive placebo.
The study’s authors said Valtrex is safe and effective, but its effect on herpes can be harmful.
“While Valtrex is effective, it should be used in patients with a known risk of genital herpes and not as an alternative,” said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, the FDA’s drug review and approval program.
Wolfe said the data is “confident and reassuring,” adding that he is “pleasing” the agency’s decision.
Valtrex is available in the United States under prescription-only drugs, which means that it is not available in the United States. The drug is also not covered by insurance, which means it does not cover insurance for patients who have a private prescription. Valtrex was approved for use in patients with a known or suspected herpes of the lips and throat.
The FDA recommends that patients with a known or suspected herpes of the lips and throat and their family members or caregivers should undergo a blood test prior to taking Valtrex. If a patient has a known herpes, a doctor or pharmacist will be able to tell the patient’s risk profile from the results of a saliva test and other tests.
